Career Pioneer Podcast | Society for Professional Women of Color

Jocelyn Tejeda and Sherry Williams, the founders of The Society for Professional Women of Color, recently talked to The Career Pioneer about how they got their start, and what led the duo to launch a professional network for women of color in 2011.

We ended up having a very robust and fun convo about what it takes to be an entrepreneur today and the work ethic involved. We also discussed what it means to find your passion and the importance of taking action, rather than waiting until “the time is right.”

In our interview, the native New Yorkers opened up about all sorts of things, from work-life balance, the challenges of working with a business partner, and more. In addition to discussion about what it takes to run a business while holding down a full-time job and their advice for new entrepreneurs, you’ll hear about:

  • The ‘aha’ moment that helped the pair identify a niche.
  • Why support among women entrepreneurs is critical, but not always reciprocal.
  • The biggest challenges of running a business and industry organization.
  • What keeps them motivated when times get tough.

Highlights from the podcast…

Be ready to stand in what it means to [be an entrepreneur]. It definitely takes a lot of work. A lot of times people get caught up in the fun part of it, and they don’t really think about the work ethic that goes into it in order for you to really build on a powerful brand. ~ Sherry Williams

Fear will always be present. But it’s about the new relationship you develop with fear. ~ Jocelyn Tejeda

When the path is not looking beautiful you have to trust the process in its entirety because it will not [always] be rainbows and butterflies. ~ Sherry Williams

Rejection is something that most people fear. But do not be afraid to ask, and be OK with the no’s. There will be that one yes that will trump everything else. ~ Jocelyn

Tejeda

We can’t  live our lives being afraid of rejection. Because the reality is, rejection is going to come. But take that and use it as fuel so that you can continue to work on whatever it is to make it better so that you can get that one ‘yes’ that’s going to take you to the next level. ~ Jocelyn Tejeda

If your heart isn’t in it, then how do you really prosper? ~ Sherry Williams
