Discovering My Career Path: Confessions of a Self-Help Junkie

Growing up in a tiny town in Southwest Georgia, I knew that I was destined to help people live more fulfilling lives. I also knew that I wanted to write in some capacity as a profession. That’s why when I graduated with a journalism degree in 2005, I decided to start a career as a health reporter at Bloomberg News in Washington, DC.

As a journalist, I became the authority on various topics of health and science, disseminating information that I hoped helped people make better, more informed decisions about how they lived their lives. Ultimately, the job met the basics of what I wanted to do in life, fulfilled a greater purpose outside my little world, and provided a solid income as well. (Can’t beat that!)

Even still, I had this aching desire to expand what I wrote to include topics like career, discovering your purpose, finding balance in this crazy world, and family.

If you don’t know much about me, know this: I am a self-proclaimed self-help junkie! I love self-help books of all kinds. If you take a glance at my collection of books right now, you’ll find books on a range of helpful topics: career, finding and living out your purpose, love, spiritual guidance, how to build wealth, how to forge closer relationships, health, and so on.

As a matter of fact, I recently checked out a couple of books called Smart Women Take Risks: 6 Steps for Conquering Your Fears and Making the Leap to Success by Helene Lerner and Stand Up For Your Life: Develop the Courage, Confidence, And Character to Fulfill Your Greatest Potential by Cheryl Richardson. Check out my Suggested Reading page for more great books!

The very sight of these books, honestly, conjures up feelings of hope, faith, and love. I don’t know what it is. . . Maybe it’s the polished appearance of the author on the front cover, or the celebrity endorsements, or the large font, or the image of woman bungee jumping, or the fact that the author is a New York Times Bestseller!

Maybe I’m drawn to these books simply because I know that I am a work in progress, and if these people have made improvements in their lives, then I can do it too. And so can you!

When the opportunity arose for me to start my own blog, while I was hesitant at first, I knew deep down in my heart that it was what I was meant to do. Share my thoughts, knowledge, and passion with the world. (Okay, right now it might just be my family and friends. Work with me here people!)

You’ll find posts related to health, relationships, career, family, and life in general.

But most importantly, you’ll discover your new path through other people’s journeys, including mine!

Stay tuned for my next post! I’ll share with you how I left a promising career in journalism and public relations to become a stay-at-home mom and entrepreneur. Be sure to sign-up for the RSS feed to be the first to receive my new posts!

I welcome your feedback too. Plus, every Pioneer needs a sidekick. So any time you have thoughts to express, I’m hear to listen!
