Hi Heather,

Thanks for stopping by the blog, and sharing what you did. You bring up a great point. Getting very specific about how money, and specifically bills, provides us the most basic things in life, is a great way to stay grateful. I practice that kind of thinking too. But like you suggested, I have those moments when grumbling clouds my vision.

Thanks again!

Hi Emily,

What a touching story about you and your dad. I have to say that paying bills is never fun, but I'm so very grateful for the life I have.

There have been times when bills were down-right scary for me and I would lie in bed awake worried about them. And those times are what I think of when I pay bills. How thankful I am that I have the money to pay these bills. Thankful that our gas bill was high this past month, because my family was toasty warm. Thankful for the car payment on the 4 wheel drive car that got my husband safely through several snow storms this past winter. Thankful for the track uniform and new shoes my 12 year old needs, because I'm blessed to have her as a daughter.

I'm not always a saint and I do grumble and complain from time to time, but I think knowing there is a contrast and being aware of it, helps to be grateful!

You hit it on the head, Pamme. That was one of the things that I felt after re-evaluating everything. It's about working hard, and enjoying life. And on top of all of that, it's about being grateful for what you have, whether that's plenty or little. Thanks for your perspective, Pamme! It's always appreciated.

I like that perspective, Dana ..."It's an investment in your life." So true. In that regard, at the end of it all, I want to be able to say I "invested" wisely and in what matters most. And that kind of mindset, I think, helps me decide on where I put my money -- toward personal activities, material things, people and initiatives that meet that criteria. Thanks for sharing, Dana!

I've definitely learned that the ability to pay the expenses and still have something to live on is not to be taken for granted. I left a full time job to work for myself, and even cutting my income by about 80% in the beginning, I'd never been happier with just being able to scrape by. Because it forced me to look at what I was grateful for, what my priorities for living were, and what I really wanted to get out of my life, and how I was making an investment in that. That's what this is - it's an investment in your life. So are we paying into and making the right investments?

As frustrating as it is to see the money come in and go out so quickly, I have a feeling of gratitude that I made it through yet another month and could take care of my family, my home and myself as well.

I've had some hardship at times in my life, and had anyone told me that I would have the responsibilities that I do have to handle on my own (and be able to do it and do it well), I might have scoffed at them. But I've done it, and I'm proud of it. So for quite a few years now, instead of being upset with the bills, I look around and see what those bills have provided me and my family with and I can't help but find some happiness in knowing that hard work made it happen and I was capable of doing it.
